For this project I was tasked with creating a futuristic device, and storyboarding an advertisement for it. I decided to create a helmet which styles your hair for you cause that would be handy nowadays! It was my first attempt at storyboarding as well as using after effects to create an animatic. Everything was drawn in Clip Studio Paint and then compiled through after effects. The animatic contains extra frames to make the animation smoother.
My immediate inspiration were the cheesy TV ads you see, but rather than having the sales person as the subject matter, I put them off screen as the narrator. I also tried steering it away from the typical ad tropes and approached it as if it were a short film.
The rough key frames were initially sketched on paper (I’ve lost them), and the digital key frames were done as you see above. I drew in between frames and did some video editing to create the animatic.
These are some character concepts of ‘Sparks’, the featured character in the ad. I was inspired by, and took a Disney styled approach in creating this animatic. I felt it was perfect for storyboarding, as I didn’t spend too much time on complex drawings but was able to have a very expressive character.
I used a combination of motorcycle helmets and Gundam heads to ideate designs for the helmet. Although it was a futuristic piece of tech, I wanted to add an element of contrast. I thought it’d be a funny contrast between a tech that automatically styles your hair, that still uses floppy disks.
